最后要祝贺Shan ShiguangChen Xilin老师拿到了CVPR08 Best Student Poster Runner-up Award 还有Quan Long老师拿到了CVPR08 Best Student Poster Award

Thinking at the coming of the 60-th paper

CVPR07 is so so for me this time, and only two papers were accepted. But I am happy that my 60-th paper comes as "Element Rearrangment for Tensor Based Learning", CVPR'07. I still remember that my 40-th paper came as a ECCV'06 paper, and it is about fourteen months ago when I worked in Hong Kong.

What can I conclude from these 60 papers?

    1. Many guys often have exciting conclusions after a period of research, and even build models on how to prepare for an excellent paper. But here I would like to share a somewhat abjective opinion: paper acceptance is a radom process, at least for relatively senior but not highly senior researchers. The facts often validate this abjective opinion. I often encourage Huanzi that we only need believe our work is excellent, and can be accepted by top conference sooner or later :-)

    2. After having stayed in Tom's group for eleven months, I am trying to change my research style from publication-driven to application-driven.  If the research is only for paper, what is the value and why should we do it?

There are much much more that I would like to share, but the ICCV deadline is coming. Let me continue after the 70-th paper.

    The 10-th Transaction Paper

Today is a special day for my research career, and I get the 10-th transaction paper from T-CSVT.

It is pretty important for a researcher to transform a research work into a transaction paper, which defaultly contains the detailed information of a work such that the readers can reimplement the work.

When I was in MSRA, conference papers are more important than transaction papers. After I moved to CUHK, I realized that it is significant to get papers published in transactions, especially for an acedemic career.

Learned a lot from Prof. Liu, Tang, Huang, Yang, Kwok, Dr. Steve, Hongjiang and many many others. Sepcial thanks to you all here from the bottom of my heart!

    My Target!

    Heart Report -- 1

It was a long time that I did not have the desire to write anything here.

It is the time to think about something in depth.

I am trying to find something that will have great impact in literature.

Paper was ever the only target of my work, and now I am trying to be more powerful in other aspects.

Life is changing, and idea is changing.

    这40天,中了2篇ICPR的paper, 不过真是不好意思,人家Shiguang Shan一下子中了12篇,让我一直没勇气说自己投了ICPR.

    这40天,中了3篇Transactions, 一篇TPAMI, 一篇TIP, 一篇TCSVT(合作的)。 终于有了自己第一篇第一作者的TPAMI, 多年的结终于解了。

    这40天,投出去了2篇Transactions, 希望好运降临到这些paper上。

    当然好事之外还有好些不爽的事:

    UAI06被拒了,天经地义了,根本不合拍的东西;

    Huanzi的ICPR06被拒了,听到这个消息真想大骂一顿,后来听Wu Ying说了一句"Random lah, we did not take the CVPR this year too seriously", 也就不了了之了;

    英语还是那么烂,这也是我们找House的原因,和周边的人能有机会多接触接触;

    UIUC 40天生活小结

    到UIUC已经40多天了,简单小结一下哦!

    环境: 环境非常好,古树成荫,空气质量绝对一流。房子大,生活设施也很齐全。

    购物: 没有车比较不爽,不过我们的Apartment在Country Market附近,所以购物还比较方便。

    消费: 高,确实高!!!手机的family plan是税后将近70没刀,将近600人民币啊;水电气大概120美刀。唯一好处是房租比美国别的地方便宜不少。 没有唐人街,只有Fareast和Korea店。

    娱乐:基本空白,至少对于大部分华人是这样。我们还凑合,出去BBQ了两次,跑到了Indiana州去了,开了将近两个小时的车。Illinois就是一个平原,平,真是很平....

    教会: 香槟华人教会,俗称CCCC。 基本没有耽搁任何时间,我们就开始了周五的Bible Study和周日的主日崇拜。很有意思的是这边每月有两次爱宴和Potluck。

    研究: 风格和MSRA及CUHK不一样,人人平等 (当然除了Tom以外 :) ),没有所谓的semi-supervision的关系。 当然对我这个懒人来说,不好的地方就是得自己开始努力coding了。不过有Yuxiao和Jilin帮忙,我想coding应该也能提高不少:)

    期待: 刚刚签了一个Duplex型的 House,很漂亮哦,估计Liangliang要流口水了,这个懒人竟然不愿剪草坪就去住Apartment了:) 还有就是要买辆好车,这样我就马上成了穷光蛋了!嗬嗬

    恭喜Shu Yang 和 Chaochao

    师妹Shu终于拿到Boston U的Offer了。这样就可以陪Chaochao在Harvard读书了。羡慕ing......

    ICML 2006 结果

    中了一篇, 直接Accepted!期待Day能凭借这一篇开始自己出国留学的生涯。

    第一次见到这么认真仔细的Area Chair, 这是我见过的最认真的审稿程序。ICML确实不一般,今年投稿>700, 收稿140篇. 和NIPS比较起来,我更喜欢ICML, 原因很简单,NIPS的审稿不是double-blinded,像我们出身“寒门”的小字辈备受冷落!真希望NIPS也能Double-blinded以圆我多年的心愿!

    看到Area Chair给Huanzi 的paper公正的评价真是happy, 期待这篇被某个会议接收!

    March 07

    ICML 2006 Rebuttal

    刚刚受洗,就要开始为ICML2006 rebuttal了!

    看起来结果还凑合,估计刘老师修改的那篇应该希望很大,其他的得看Area Chair脸色了!这好像和CVPR06差不多哦!

    New-born Life (Mar. 05, 2006)

After three year's fellowship life, we couple, Simon and Michelle, were baptised on March 05, 2006, by Chaplain, Dr. Andrew Wai Man NG, at the Chung Chi College Chapel of the Chinese Univeristy of Hong Kong.

Thanks god to give new lifes to us two!

Poster.

    February 21

    February 10

    CVPR2006 Rebuttal

    February 09

    After ICML06

Each problem that I solve should become a rule which serves afterwards to solve other problems.

    January 10

    The 40th paper comes

I have waited such a long time for the coming of the 40th paper; and it finally comes from ECCV06 with no accompanier.

I extremely like this paper, because it is really solving problem, not A+B or extensions, which follows my  proverb:

Each problem that I solve should become a rule which serves afterwards to solve other problems.

Now, I do not care how many papers are accepted, I care whether I really did something contritbuting to machine learning literature.

Shiguang told me that his favorite paper was rejected, yet  other paper was unexpectedly accepted. I think it is possible, since there are so many CV researchers who are thinking about how to write a paper, not just how to solve a problem.

Chaochao's paper was unbelievably rejected; I think the reason is that the reviewers cannot follow your paper with so many mathematics at all. It is the reviewer's fault, not yours.

Daijuan's paper was also rejected; the negative reviewer was so funny, producing a false review based on his/her theory that the k-nearest neighbors of one point include itself.

Actually, as Prof. Tang said, the results are somewhat random, so do not too much care about the results.

All my friends, continue your steps, and you will get what you want!!!!
